Open Application — Scientists, Engineers and Independent Builders
For people whose strongest work does not fit neatly into a job title.
The role
We welcome thoughtful approaches from people whose abilities and interests do not map to a listed position. The most useful introductions show real work and suggest a concrete way to contribute to the research.
The work
- Tell us which scientific or engineering problem in neural interfaces you would be motivated to work on.
- Show one substantial thing you have built, measured, investigated, or written, with your individual contribution clear.
- Propose a practical starting project or collaboration that matches your skills and the company’s current stage.
- Be comfortable working from first principles, asking for evidence, and revising ideas when experiments disagree.
- Communicate clearly across disciplines and take responsibility for bringing a bounded task to completion.
What matters
- Research, engineering, mathematics, computing, biology, design-for-manufacture, or other demonstrated technical ability.
- Independent work that can be examined and discussed matters more than conventional credentials.
- Breadth is welcome; depth in at least one area is particularly valuable.
- We are open to full-time, project-based, advisory, and research-collaboration discussions when appropriate.
What good work looks like
A credible discussion of one problem you could own and the evidence you could produce.
Why this work matters
Important contributions are not always predicted by an organizational chart.
Get in touch
Send us your CV, your personal website or examples of work you have done, particularly one substantial example of work you are proud of and what you might contribute here. Include an informal handwritten statement of purpose, with no prescribed length, telling us why this mission matters to you, what difficult work has taught you, and what you would like to take responsibility for at Walnut. This mission will demand scientific rigor, patience, independent thinking and a willingness to test ideas against reality. Write the statement entirely in your own words, without using generative AI. We will not consider statements written using AI. A photograph or scan of the statement is sufficient, and a typed version is welcome if handwriting is difficult. A reference from someone who knows your work is welcome, but not required.
