Neurosurgery and Translational Neurotechnology Advisor

Advise on anatomical constraints and translation of novel neural-interface architectures.

The role

Challenge early device concepts against anatomy, access routes, tissue interactions, and longer-term translational constraints. We seek judgment that can change an engineering plan before considerable time is spent building the wrong instrument.

The work

  • Evaluate proposed neural-interface architectures from anatomical and surgical perspectives.
  • Advise on device form factors, implantation constraints, tissue interactions and access pathways.
  • Identify translational limitations and clinically meaningful performance requirements.
  • Review preclinical research protocols in coordination with appropriately qualified veterinary and animal-research personnel.
  • Provide guidance on clinical-relevance questions, surgical feasibility and longer-term translational strategy.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary research discussions and appropriately designed feasibility studies.

What matters

  • Qualified neurosurgeon, physician-scientist or researcher with substantial relevant neurosurgical expertise.
  • Experience or interest in neural implants, electrophysiology, neuroimaging or translational medical devices.
  • Ability to work critically with physicists, engineers and experimental neuroscientists.

What good work looks like

An evidence-based assessment of device feasibility and constraints relevant to eventual translation.

Why this work matters

Shape ambitious technical ideas around real anatomy and practical constraints.

Get in touch

Send us your CV, your personal website or examples of work you have done, particularly relevant research or clinical experience and how you might collaborate. Include an informal handwritten statement of purpose, with no prescribed length, telling us why this mission matters to you, what difficult work has taught you, and what you would like to take responsibility for at Walnut. This mission will demand scientific rigor, patience, independent thinking and a willingness to test ideas against reality. Write the statement entirely in your own words, without using generative AI. We will not consider statements written using AI. A photograph or scan of the statement is sufficient, and a typed version is welcome if handwriting is difficult. A reference from someone who knows your work is welcome, but not required.
