Biomedical Research Scientist — Wet Lab, Tissue Models and Experimental Systems

Build biological models and laboratory experiments to test new physical instruments.

The role

Build physical and biological test systems that expose the limitations of new sensing ideas before they reach complex experiments. You will characterize materials, document preparation methods, and show how reliably a phantom or sample reproduces the properties it is meant to represent.

The work

  • Prepare and characterize biologically relevant tissue models, hydrogels and physical phantoms.
  • Develop sample preparation, laboratory measurement and quality-control protocols.
  • Characterize relevant mechanical, optical, acoustic or electrical properties of experimental materials.
  • Support biocompatibility and tissue-interface evaluation through appropriate approved methods.
  • Work with engineering teams to design test fixtures and experimental platforms.
  • Coordinate laboratory equipment, materials, documentation and reproducibility.
  • Support approved ex vivo and in vivo research studies in collaboration with qualified investigators.
  • Analyze results and identify discrepancies between physical models and biological measurements.

What matters

  • Background in biomedical engineering, biotechnology, biomaterials, biophysics or experimental life sciences.
  • Strong hands-on laboratory skills and careful experimental documentation.
  • Experience with tissue phantoms, hydrogels, biological samples, microscopy or physical property characterization.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety and applicable research ethics.
  • Ability to work across disciplines and communicate experimental limitations clearly.

What good work looks like

Well-characterized tissue models and repeatable measurement procedures with traceable material properties and uncertainties.

Why this work matters

Find out what survives when theoretical instruments meet biological materials.

Get in touch

Send us your CV, your personal website or examples of work you have done, particularly a laboratory method, materials experiment or physical model you developed. Include an informal handwritten statement of purpose, with no prescribed length, telling us why this mission matters to you, what difficult work has taught you, and what you would like to take responsibility for at Walnut. This mission will demand scientific rigor, patience, independent thinking and a willingness to test ideas against reality. Write the statement entirely in your own words, without using generative AI. We will not consider statements written using AI. A photograph or scan of the statement is sufficient, and a typed version is welcome if handwriting is difficult. A reference from someone who knows your work is welcome, but not required.
